Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne Story: A Gunship Ahead of Its Time. Rare Restored Footage

In the mid-1960s, the United States Army sought an unprecedented combat capability: a dedicated attack platform possessing the hovering agility of a helicopter paired with the raw speed and stability of a fixed-wing combat aircraft. The result of this ambitious quest was the Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne. Developed under the Advanced Aerial Fire Support System (AAFSS) program, the Cheyenne emerged from foundational engineering trials that began in the late 1950s with a simple radio-controlled model and the experimental Model CL-475. By replacing hinged rotors with a pioneering rigid rotor and a mechanical control gyro, Lockheed engineers eliminated conventional rotary instability, proving that helicopters could achieve fixed-wing handling qualities. This breakthrough led directly to the turbine-powered XH-51, which shattered rotary speed benchmarks by exceeding 200 miles per hour, followed by the FAA-certified Model 286, capable of executing full loops, barrel rolls, and inverted flight. To defeat retreating blade stall at extreme forward velocities, Lockheed added stub wings and an auxiliary Pratt & Whitney J60 turbojet to an experimental XH-51, pushing compound flight past 300 miles per hour. With combat experience in Vietnam revealing that armed Bell UH-1 Hueys lacked the speed and payload capacity to protect airmobile transport forces, the Army awarded Lockheed a contract to construct ten AH-56 Cheyenne prototypes. Powered by a General Electric T64 turboshaft driving a rigid four-blade main rotor and a steerable rear pusher propeller, the AH-56 attained speeds exceeding 250 miles per hour. It boasted an integrated 360-degree swiveling gunner station equipped with night vision, laser rangefinders, helmet-mounted sights, and a computerized fire control suite directing 30mm cannons, 40mm grenade launchers, unguided rockets, and wire-guided TOW anti-tank missiles. Despite reaching unprecedented milestones at the Yuma Proving Grounds, dynamic rotor instabilities known as the half-P hop triggered a fatal crash off California in March 1969. Although Lockheed rectified the issue with an advanced underslung gyro control mechanism, rising production costs, interservice political conflict with the United States Air Force over the A-10 Thunderbolt II program, and the combat deployment of the interim Bell AH-1 Cobra brought about the cancellation of the Cheyenne contract in August 1972. The technological foundation pioneered by the AH-56 lived on directly in the development of the McDonnell Douglas AH-64 Apache. Presented in fully restored and colorized archival footage, this comprehensive documentary chronicles the complete technical odyssey, triumphs, and trials of the Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne compound gunship program.
