The Impossible 1911 Flight That Reached California in 49 Days. Rare Restored Archival Footage

The years following the initial powered flights at Kitty Hawk tested the physical limits of pioneer aircraft and the resolve of their builders. This historical chronicle traces the development of early heavier-than-air flight, beginning with Wilbur Wright’s public demonstrations in France and Italy, which convinced a skeptical European public of three-axis aerodynamic control. At Fort Myer, the United States Signal Corps instituted rigid requirements for speed, payload, and cross-country endurance. The 1908 trials resulted in the first fatal powered airplane crash, injuring Orville Wright and killing Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge. One year later, the Wrights returned with the 1909 Military Flyer, successfully completing trials alongside Lieutenants Lahm and Foulois to deliver the first military aircraft. European aeronautics advanced at a blistering pace. Louis Blériot bridged the English Channel in July 1909, establishing the strategic vulnerability of island nations. Shortly after, the Reims air meet brought together the premier designers of France against Glenn Curtiss, whose Curtiss No. 2 Golden Flyer secured top honors and marked the beginning of bitter patent litigation. The documentary explores the mechanics of the Wright Model B, highlighting its sluggish lateral response, wing-warping system, and transition toward modern ailerons, as observed by the first generation of military aviators at College Park. The narrative reaches its peak with the 1911 race for the Hearst Transcontinental Prize. Calbraith Perry Rodgers embarked on an unprecedented journey from New York to California aboard the Wright EX biplane Vin Fiz. Relying on railway lines for navigation and supported by mechanic Charlie Taylor, Rodgers spent forty-nine days overcoming engine failures, structural collapses, and desert storms. Reaching Pasadena and Long Beach with a heavily rebuilt aircraft, Rodgers proved that continental flight was achievable. Presented using newly restored, stabilized, and colorized archival footage, this film documents the technological foundation of modern flight.
