How They Raced in 1953: Restored Color Footage of the 1953 Italian Mille Miglia

Experience the drama, engineering, and sheer grit of the 1953 Mille Miglia, newly restored and presented in full color from rare archival reels. Over a thousand miles of public roads from Brescia to Rome and back, the 1953 edition brought together world-class factory teams and daring privateers in an epic battle of endurance and raw speed. The film traces the narrative from early factory preparations at Maranello, Alfa Romeo’s experimental tests at Monza, and the OSCA and Maserati workshops in Bologna. In Brescia, race director Renzo Castagneto—wearing his trademark 1927 beret—dispatched more than five hundred competitors at staggered intervals. The numbering painted on each car reflected its exact starting time, creating a rolling timeline of competition across eight distinct categories, from modest 750cc touring saloons to four-liter sports prototypes. Along the Adriatic coast, high speeds produced immediate drama. Giannino Marzotto averaged over one hundred miles per hour for the first 180 miles, while Alfa Romeo’s Consalvo Sanesi established an unmatched pace to Pescara. Turning inland through the rugged Apennines, drivers navigated blind corners, unguarded level crossings, and wall-to-wall crowds without modern safety barriers. By the time the leaders checked into the Rome control, Karl Kling and Juan Manuel Fangio held the advantage for Alfa Romeo, but the hardest driving lay ahead. Heading north through the Tuscan hills, the race became an unrelenting duel between Fangio’s Alfa Romeo 3000 CM and Giannino Marzotto’s Ferrari 340 MM. Marzotto sliced away the deficit corner by corner, conquering the dreaded Futa Pass to smash a fifteen-year-old climbing record. When Fangio suffered severe steering damage heading into Bologna, the final sprint across the Lombardy flatlands turned into a test of survival, culminating in an unforgettable victory for Marzotto and an extraordinary display of driving skill from Fangio.
