The Experimental Flight Rare Archives: From Pogo to Dyna-Soar

In the crucible of early Cold War defense planning, military strategists faced a sobering vulnerability: fixed concrete runways could be obliterated in the opening minutes of a thermonuclear conflict. What followed was one of the most audacious chapters in aeronautical engineering, exploring aircraft that could operate entirely free of conventional airstrips. This comprehensive documentary examines the astonishing breadth of mid-century experimental aviation. The journey begins with the United States Navy’s radical Project Hummingbird and the quest for tail-sitting turboprop interceptors. Experience the complete development of the Convair XFY-1 Pogo and Lockheed XFV-1, powered by the massive twin-power turbine Allison T40 driving contra-rotating propellers, where test pilot Skeets Coleman mastered the art of vertical ascents and harrowing backward landings. The investigation moves into deflected slipstream research with the Ryan VZ-3 Vertiplane, followed by the pioneering lifting body concepts that defined the transition into spaceflight. From the canceled Boeing X-20 Dyna-Soar to the Martin Marietta X-24A and the needle-nosed X-24B, discover how unpowered steep-glide landings proved essential in stripping dead weight from the Space Shuttle. The technological narrative explores the jet-powered Ryan X-13 VertiJet hooking onto its vertical mobile trailer, the British Miles M.57 Aerovan, the Ryan XV-5 Vertifan tip-turbine lift fans that led directly to modern high-bypass turbofans, the flexible Rogallo-winged Ryan XV-8 Fleep, and the Doak VZ-4DA tilt-duct research aircraft. Delve into the history of canard aerodynamics, spanning the Focke-Wulf Ente and secretive Model 42 bomber, the twin-winged Miles Libellula, America's Curtiss XP-55 Ascender, and Japan’s desperate Kyushu J7W1 Shinden. Finally, uncover the monumental Cold War saga of the atomic-powered airplane: the Convair NB-36H Crusader carrying an active nuclear reactor shielded by tons of lead and crystal glass, until airborne jet refueling rendered atomic bombers obsolete.
