Between May and October 1942, the Western Desert was the arena for one of modern military history’s most dramatic wars of movement. This rare archival presentation, meticulously restored in 4K and full color, chronicles the tactical maneuvers of Panzer Army Africa and Italian mobile divisions against the British Eighth Army. The offensive opened with the assault on the fortified Gazala Line and the desperate siege of Bir Hakeim, where colonial troops resisted repeated armored attacks before the position finally fell, exposing the Allied flank and opening the road to the coast. The capture of Tobruk formed the centerpiece of the Axis summer drive. Archival footage reveals the coordinated air-ground doctrine that unhinged the fortress: continuous Stuka dive-bombing runs on coastal artillery, Bangalore torpedo demolitions by combat engineers, and point-blank fire from anti-aircraft batteries against armored counterattacks. The catastrophic loss of Tobruk stripped the Allied forces of their premier forward naval base and handed vast stores of vehicles and ammunition to the advancing columns, driving the front across the Libyan-Egyptian border toward Mersa Matruh.
