North American X-15: The Rocket Plane That Reached Mach 6.7

In the late 1950s, aerospace engineers confronted a brutal reality: standard aircraft aluminum softened under the immense temperatures generated past Mach 3. To bridge the terrifying gap between conventional aviation and orbital spaceflight, North American Aviation constructed three research aircraft made from Inconel X nickel-chromium alloy, designated the X-15. Carried aloft beneath the wing of a modified Boeing NB-52 bomber and dropped over the barren desert ranges of Utah and Nevada, these black rocket ships were built to penetrate the upper atmosphere and return safely to a dry lakebed runway. Powered initially by interim XLR11 rocket engines and later by the formidable 57,000-pound-thrust Reaction Motors XLR99, the program pushed into uncharted aerodynamic territory. Veteran test pilot Scott Crossfield proved the basic flight characteristics, surviving violent pitch oscillations and severe landing gear failures on the Rogers Dry Lake expanse. As the flight envelope expanded, military and civilian pilots confronted the perils of the thin upper atmosphere, where aerodynamic surfaces lost all bite, requiring nose and wingtip hydrogen peroxide reaction controls to maintain attitude. Major Bob White and NASA research pilot Joe Walker drove Ship Number One and Ship Number Three to unprecedented heights, passing 50 miles high and crossing the Kármán line to earn official astronaut status. Following a severe rollover crash, aircraft Number Two was rebuilt into the modified X-15A-2, fitted with external propellant drop tanks and coated with pink MA-25S ablative heat shielding topped with white paint. Flown by Pete Knight on October 3, 1967, the aircraft attained an astounding Mach 6.7—4,520 miles per hour—scorching its lower ventral fin in shockwave heat that permanently retired the airframe. Just weeks later, disaster struck when Major Michael Adams suffered electrical failures and spatial disorientation in Ship Three, leading to a catastrophic hypersonic spin and structural breakup. Spanning 199 powered and glide missions, the research gathered by the X-15 fleet directly enabled the development of the Space Shuttle, pioneering atmospheric re-entry techniques that remain standard today.
