The History of VMF-214: F4U Corsairs, Mitsubishi Zeros, B-24 Escorts, and Carrier CV-13

In late 1943, the struggle for the Solomon Islands had devolved into a relentless war of attrition across open ocean and malaria-ridden jungle outposts. Victory in the South Pacific hinged on air superiority, and the United States Marine Corps introduced a formidable new fighter to the theater: the Vought F4U Corsair. Powered by a 2,000-horsepower Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp radial engine and built with an inverted gull wing to clear its massive propeller, the aircraft proved too temperamental for early Navy carrier decks. Handed over to land-based Marines operating from crushed coral runways, the Corsair found its true calling under the command of Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington. Born in 1912 and raised in an Idaho lumber town as Gregory Hallenbeck, Boyington fell in love with aviation after a childhood ride in a barnstorming Curtiss Jenny. After working as a draftsman at Boeing, he discovered his biological surname was Boyington, allowing him to conceal his marriage and enter Marine flight training at Pensacola. Plagued by mounting debts and heavy drinking, he resigned his commission in 1941 to fly with Claire Chennault's American Volunteer Group, the Flying Tigers, defending the Burma Road. Returning home after clashing with AVG leadership, Boyington parked cars in Seattle until a bourbon-fueled telegram to Navy Secretary Frank Knox secured his reinstatement as a Marine major. Authorized to form VMF-214 from replacement pool pilots and stabilized by intelligence officer Frank Walton, Boyington trained his men to use the Corsair's superior diving speed and six .50-caliber machine guns to ambush nimble Mitsubishi A6M Zeros from above. On September 16, 1943, VMF-214 downed 11 enemy planes over Bougainville, with Boyington scoring five kills in a single sortie. Between rations of Spam, R&R at the Hotel Australia in Sydney, arrest orders from rival Colonel Joe Smoke, close-air-support strafing runs, and brutal B-24 Liberator escorts over Rabaul, the squadron tallied 94 confirmed aerial victories before Boyington was shot down on January 3, 1944. Captured by a Japanese submarine and held at Omori Prison while a reformed VMF-214 suffered tragedy aboard the carrier USS Franklin in March 1945, Boyington survived to reunite with his men in San Francisco and receive the Medal of Honor.
