Rare WWII Restored Actual War Footage in Color: The Relentless Air Campaign for New Guinea

In 1942, while global attention remained fixed on Europe and the Mediterranean, Australian and American forces fought a grueling campaign across the 1,400-mile expanse of New Guinea. Divided by 16,000-foot mountain ranges and dense tropical jungle, the island initially held only one Allied bastion: Port Moresby. From their major stronghold at Rabaul on New Britain, Japanese forces launched relentless day and night raids against Seven Mile and Three Mile airstrips as Allied troops advanced toward Finschhafen, supplied by heavy transport aircraft over terrain impassable by road. Narrated first-hand by an engineering officer of the 8th Fighter Group, Fifth Air Force, this archival documentary chronicles two and a half years of combat and maintenance operations with the 35th, 36th, and 80th Fighter Squadrons. Following Easter 1943 rest and promotion ceremonies under Major McNay at Mareeba in Northern Australia, ground crews and pilots deploy to the malaria-infested Lever Brothers coconut plantation at Milne Bay. Operating off pierced steel planking, mechanics faced the logistical challenge of simultaneously maintaining Bell P-39 Airacobras, Curtiss P-40 Warhawks, and twin-engine Lockheed P-38 Lightnings. Detailed field footage captures a mid-engine P-39 engine change, revealing the drive shaft beneath the pilot and the 37mm or 20mm hub cannon, alongside unscripted scenes of 80th Squadron P-38 pilots returning from dogfights against Mitsubishi A6M Zeros. The film documents the destructive January 1943 Japanese G4M Betty bomber raid on Milne Bay, awards presented by General Paul Wurtsmith and General George C. Kenney, and the shattered remains of Japanese aircraft at Lae. Operations expand to Nadzab, where modified B-25 Mitchell strafers packing eight forward-firing .50-caliber machine guns launch 800-mile strikes against Hollandia, followed by monsoon conditions at Cape Gloucester, B-17 Flying Fortress flights over the Owen Stanley Range, a PBY Catalina river rescue, Central Highlands barter economies at Mount Hagen, and rare Townsville range training featuring Pearl Harbor veteran Lieutenant George Welch and Colonel Wise.
