Two Great Armadas: The WWII Allied Invasion of North Africa. The Brutal Fight for Tunisia Restored

In late 1942, the Western Mediterranean became the proving ground for the largest combined amphibious and aerial enterprise the world had yet witnessed. Presented in fully restored and colorized archival footage, this comprehensive historical documentary chronicles the complete trajectory of the North African campaign—from the clandestine planning of Operation Acrobat in Washington and London to the final collapse of Axis forces on the Cape Bon peninsula in May 1943. The narrative opens with two vast Allied naval convoys steaming under strict secrecy from the United States and Great Britain, screened by the Fleet Air Arm, Coastal Command, and Allied warships. Following General Mark Clark’s covert submarine mission and General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s arrival at Gibraltar, Operation Torch strikes on November 8, 1942. Viewers witness the simultaneous landings at Casablanca, Oran, and Algiers, including the long-range 1,500-mile airborne drop from Britain, the naval duel with the French battleship Jean Bart, and the unification of American, British, and French forces under a single command. As the British First Army races eastward toward Tunis and Bizerte, paratroopers seize forward airfields at Bône under heavy Luftwaffe attack. Only fifteen miles from Tunis, overextended supply lines and torrential winter rains halt the Allied advance, turning dirt airstrips into impassable mud along the mountain barrier of the Great Dorsal. Throughout the winter stalemate, an unprecedented transatlantic supply effort unfolds. Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses and Consolidated B-24 Liberators strike Axis staging ports in Sicily, Sardinia, and Italy, while Lockheed P-38 Lightnings ferry across the South Atlantic from Brazil and 1,500 aircraft are assembled on the Rock of Gibraltar. Following the January 1943 Casablanca Conference, the campaign reaches its climax: the armored clashes at Faid and Kasserine Pass, the destruction of 52 German Tiger tanks, the bombardment and outflanking of the Mareth Line, the grueling infantry assaults on Longstop Hill and Hill 609, and the final coordinated air-ground offensive that forced 266,000 Axis soldiers to lay down their arms.
