The First Barons' War (1215–1217) of England resulted from King John's disastrous wars against King Philip II of France, and John's subsequent refusal to abide by Magna Carta. King Philip's son, Louis, in 1216, then sailed to England with an army and soon controlled over half of the English kingdom, and was proclaimed "King of England" in London by the barons. Louis's army was finally beaten at the Battle of Lincoln on 20 May 1217 when the 70 year old William Marshal led an assault on the city, leading a cavalry charge down the packed streets and fighting in the square in front of the famous cathedral.
