Cyprus, an Archaeological Crossroads

The island of Cyprus, situated in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, has occupied a unique scholarly position betwixt and between multiple disciplines and fields of study: classics, prehistory, Near Eastern studies, Byzantine studies, anthropology. Known for its rich archaeological records, spanning tens of millennia, which provide evidence for the complex intermixing of multiple cultural traditions, Cyprus nevertheless remains outside mainstream archaeological scholarship. In this talk, we will explore what makes Cyprus a fascinating archaeological subject as well as what processes, practices, and historical contexts have led to its peculiar position as both a crossroads of culture and as marginal to archaeological discourse. Highlighting several objects recovered from different periods in the island’s long history, as well as Cypriot archaeologists and their work, the talk confronts the metaphorical crossroads to advocate attention (and celebration) of the island’s singular and remarkable histories.
