Early jet age aviation history was forever changed by the Boeing 707 and its legendary Dash-80 prototype, a daring project that birthed modern commercial jet transport and vital Cold War aerial refueling capabilities. Military operations, particularly the refueling of high-altitude B-52 bombers, were severely limited by the slow speeds of the KC-97 Stratocruisers. In an unprecedented move, a small team of engineers convinced their board of directors to gamble sixteen million dollars—a quarter of their company's net worth—to build a multi-engine jet demonstrator in complete secrecy. This documentary explores the intense developmental challenges of the Dash-80. Before it ever left the ground, the prototype suffered a catastrophic landing gear collapse during a taxi test. Later, a braking failure sent the multi-million dollar aircraft careening into a concrete ditch. Despite these harrowing setbacks, the aircraft was eventually proven as a highly capable platform for both the military and the commercial sector. The defining moment of the jet's promotional tour occurred over Lake Washington during a hydroplane race. Chief test pilot Tex Johnston executed a flawless, entirely unauthorized barrel roll in front of the world's leading aviation executives. This single 1-G maneuver changed public perception and silenced competitors. However, the battle was far from over.
