History In Color: How Americans Actually Lived More Than A Century Ago. Restored Film

The fabric of early twentieth-century American life was woven with arduous labor and profound isolation. In the years preceding the First World War, the rural landscape was characterized by rich, rolling terrains that remained frustratingly inaccessible. The man on the farm toiled exactly as his forefathers had, locked in the everlasting cycle of seed time and harvest. Life for both man and beast was incredibly hard. For the farmer's wife, the days were exhaustingly long, often ending in quiet, dimly lit evenings with no place to go and absolutely no light to read by. A simple trip to market required a man to think twice before navigating deeply rutted, muddy roads, and sometimes he never even made it to his destination. Children faced a long, arduous walk to school, finding their only reprieve in winter sleigh rides or daring climbs up the old elm tree. Meanwhile, urban centers moved at a sluggish but steadily growing pace. The city offered new marvels, from Faneuil Hall in Boston to the Lower East Side of New York. Citizens rode elevated trains far uptown, marveled at the triangle-shaped Flatiron Building, and stared up at the Woolworth Building, which stood a staggering sixty stories high as the tallest in the world. Leisure began to take new forms, with leisurely strolls through Central Park, thrilling rides at Coney Island, and vacations to Atlantic City where visitors waved out the eye of a massive elephant-shaped hotel at the end of the boardwalk. Whether it was ice boating on a clear, cold day or marveling at Buffalo Bill Cody touring with his circus in his seventy-first year, the culture of America was slowly awakening to the possibilities of modernity.
