The evolution of twentieth-century aerial warfare was completely transformed by individuals operating far from the front lines. In the winter of 1938, Stanley Hooker, who openly admitted he lacked practical engineering experience, arrived at the chaotic center of the Rolls-Royce Derby factory. Armed with degrees in mathematics and physics from Imperial College and Oxford, Hooker possessed a profound theoretical understanding of aerodynamics. Assigned to analyze supercharger testing, he calculated exact fluid dynamics and envisioned a two-stage supercharger that forced massive volumes of dense air into the combustion chambers at extreme altitudes. This mathematical revelation functioned flawlessly on its first trial, instantly granting the Supermarine Spitfire an additional seventy miles per hour in speed and ten thousand feet of combat ceiling. British aviators were thus able to out-climb and outmaneuver the formidable German Focke-Wulf 190.
