Restore History in Color: Ferrari vs Alfa Romeo, The 1953 Mille Miglia Italian Road Race

In May 1953, more than 500 competition automobiles and 1,000 drivers and co-drivers gathered along the avenues of Brescia for the 20th running of the Mille Miglia. Restored from original archival reels and brought to life in full color, this documentary chronicles the entire 1,000-mile endurance contest across Italy’s open public highways, from Lombardy to the gates of Rome and back. The film opens behind the scenes with race director Renzo Castagneto in Brescia and visits the workshops of OSCA and Maserati in Bologna. At Maranello, Enzo Ferrari oversees final preparations alongside Gigi Villoresi, Giuseppe Farina, Mike Hawthorn, and American driver Tom Cole, while Giannino Marzotto tests his open-top 4.1-liter Ferrari on the streets of Modena. In Milan and at Monza, Alfa Romeo’s Consalvo Sanesi and Zanardi secretly test a compact, large-displacement coupe built for Juan Manuel Fangio and Karl Kling. Meanwhile, Count Maggi hosts the British Aston Martin team—led by Reg Parnell, Peter Collins, and George Abecassis—at Collina, joined in the international field by Stirling Moss, Tony Rolt, and John Fitch. Divided into four touring and four sports classes ranging from 750cc saloons to unlimited prototypes, the cars depart Brescia one by one with their starting times painted onto their bodywork. At 9:00 PM, a Fiat Topolino leads the small Dyna Panhard, DB, and Renault entries into the night toward the Adriatic coast, followed before dawn by OSCAs, Maseratis, Porsches, and the high-powered works teams. Sprinting south through Ravenna and Pescara at speeds exceeding 180 mph, the leaders climb the Abruzzi mountains through Popoli and L'Aquila before descending to Rome, where Kling and Fangio hold the lead for Alfa Romeo. On the grueling return north through Radicofani, Siena, and Florence, Giannino Marzotto attacks the Apennines, shattering Clemente Biondetti’s 1938 record over the Futa Pass to take the lead at Bologna. Despite a broken steering linkage that leaves only one front wheel responding, Fangio courageously pilots his Alfa Romeo through the rain to finish second behind Marzotto’s victorious Ferrari, while Felice Bonetto secures third for Lancia, Parnell finishes fifth driving on his ignition switch, and Biondetti pushes his stricken Lancia two and a half miles uphill across the Brescia finish line.
